• Spin to Call: Before smartphones with touch screens, people used rotary telephones! To make a phone call, you had to stick your finger in a numbered dial and spin it in a circle for every single number.
• Music from a Horn: A gramophone was one of the very first ways people could listen to recorded music at home. It used a tiny needle to read grooves on a spinning flat disc, and the sound was amplified through a giant brass horn!
• Pinecone Power: Traditional cuckoo clocks were invented in the Black Forest of Germany hundreds of years ago. They are powered by heavy iron weights (often shaped like pinecones) pulling on chains, which make a tiny mechanical bird pop out and sing "cuckoo" every hour.
• What is Upcycling? Upcycling is when you take an old, unused item and turn it into something new and useful. Just like the giant repurposed objects in these coloring pages, you can upcycle things at home, like turning an empty milk carton into a bird feeder!
