While our previous tips focused on safety colors and adding action lines, today we are diving into how to color specific materials—namely, shiny glass and heavy-duty metal!
Creating Realistic Glass Reflections
Many of our new vehicles feature large, prominent windows. To make the riverboat's massive curved roof or the streetcar's rectangular viewing windows look like real glass, encourage your students or children to use light blues and soft greys.
Pro Tip: Try leaving a sharp, diagonal streak of pure white paper uncolored across the window panes. This simple art trick mimics the glare of the sun reflecting off the glass and instantly adds a cool 3D effect to the drawing!
Making Metal Look Heavy and Shiny
When tackling construction and service vehicles, creating a metallic finish can be an incredibly fun challenge for older kids.
For machines like the city snowblower truck, use contrast to your advantage. Blending very dark greys or black right next to bright white highlights gives the illusion of gleaming, polished steel. You can apply this exact same technique to the large metal bucket of the front-end loader!
To make it even more realistic, add touches of rust using browns and oranges around the edges of the machine's working parts to give it a hardworking, weathered look.
Not all vehicles are massive machines! We've also added some charming sidewalk staples to the collection.
These smaller carts, like the ice cream delivery tricycle and the classic hot dog cart, are fantastic for practicing fine motor skills and experimenting with bright, cheerful umbrella patterns.
