As wind blows across the surface of the water, friction transfers energy from the air to the ocean. These coastal birds have a remarkable throat pouch that acts like a built-in fishing net. A brown pelican's pouch can hold up to three gallons of water—that's actually two to three times more than its stomach can hold! They swoop down, scoop up water and fish, and then tip their heads to squeeze the water out before swallowing their catch.
Under the surface, sea turtles are true ancient mariners. These magnificent marine reptiles have been swimming in Earth's oceans for over 100 million years, meaning their ancestors shared the planet with the dinosaurs! Sea turtles are also incredible navigators. Many of them migrate thousands of miles across entire oceans to feed, and female turtles will return to the exact same beach where they were born just to lay their own eggs.
Snorkeling is a favorite summer pastime that lets us observe these underwater wonders up close. Here's a fun historical fact for your kids: one of America's founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, was an avid swimmer who invented an early version of swim fins when he was just 11 years old! While his were made of wood and worn on the hands like paddles, today's rubber foot flippers use the same basic idea. They increase our surface area, allowing us to push more water and swim much faster with less effort.
