Coloring Tip: Coloring glass can seem tricky, but it is a fun challenge for older kids! To make the giant camera lens or the glass of our new
look transparent, encourage your students or children to leave a few stark white streaks or curves to represent light reflections. Using a very light, icy blue around the edges of the glass before transitioning to the colors of the plants inside will give the illustration a fantastic 3D dome effect!
Music and nature combine in another spectacular new page. Imagine a piano that plays the sound of a rushing stream!
Coloring Tip: When coloring the grand piano, kids can practice creating wood textures. Instead of coloring in a solid block of brown, have them use a darker brown colored pencil to draw wavy, parallel lines to mimic natural wood grain. For the cascading water, sweeping, downward strokes with varying shades of blue, teal, and aqua will create a realistic sense of motion. Leaving the foam at the bottom completely white makes the waterfall look dynamic and alive.
Coloring isn't just about staying inside the lines; it is a wonderful gateway to creative writing and storytelling.
Coloring Tip: Use the new pop-up spring book page as a classroom or rainy-day activity prompt. Ask your children, "If you could walk over that tiny wooden bridge and into the book, what kind of magical creatures would you meet?" Let them color the scene first, and then have them write or dictate a short story about the world they just brought to life.
