Traditional Chinese architecture and decorations often feature beautiful, interlocking wooden patterns. When coloring these geometric details, the trick is to create high contrast.
Use fine-liner pens or very sharp colored pencils for the wooden lattice of the lantern. To make the intricate woodwork stand out, keep the background panels light and soft. A gentle wash of watercolor or pale pastel on the inner lantern panels will ensure the dark, rigid lines of the woodcarving take center stage without getting lost in a sea of heavy colors.
Several of our pages feature traditional bamboo steamers or woven mats. Rather than coloring these items in a single, flat shade of brown, you can easily replicate the look of woven natural fibers.
Start with a base layer of light tan or cream. Then, take a darker brown pencil and make short, alternating horizontal and vertical dashes along the woven lines. This hatching technique mimics the over-and-under pattern of real bamboo, giving your festive steamed bun baskets a realistic, three-dimensional texture.
Coloring a flat piece of paper can seem unexciting, but with a simple mixed-media trick, you can give calligraphy scrolls an authentic, ancient rice-paper feel.
Before coloring the scroll, lightly rub a white crayon over the paper in random, patchy strokes. Then, apply a very light, watery wash of yellow or beige watercolor over the scroll. The wax from the crayon will resist the watercolor, leaving a mottled, textured appearance that looks exactly like handmade parchment! Once dry, use a bold black marker to fill in the calligraphy characters so they look freshly painted by our cheerful Zodiac Rabbit.

To make these tiny embroidered details shine, use metallic gel pens. Coloring the main fabric of the Ox's vest with standard matte crayons or colored pencils, and then using a gold or silver gel pen strictly for the embroidered threads, creates a stunning mixed-finish effect. You can apply this same technique to the tuning pegs and strings of the Erhu to give the wooden instrument a realistic gleam.
