Coloring Tip - Dynamic Water: When coloring aquatic scenes, encourage children to move beyond a single blue crayon. By blending teal, navy, and light blue, they can create depth in the harbor waters. Leaving the tips of the waves uncolored (or using a white crayon) is a fantastic way to simulate the sea foam created by the ferry's hull!
When winter weather hits the city, heavy machinery comes to the rescue. The city snowblower truck is a fascinating machine that uses a large metal auger to chew through thick ice and deep snowbanks.
Coloring Tip - Shading Snow: Snow can be incredibly tricky to color since the paper is already white. Teach kids to use very light blues or pale purples to shade the bottom edges of the snowbanks and the snow flying out of the truck's chute. This simple trick adds 3D volume to an otherwise flat white space, making the winter scene pop.

Coloring Tip - Showing Speed: How do you make a drawing look fast? Show your students or children how to draw light, horizontal "whoosh" lines trailing behind the back of the train. Coloring the background sky or nearby buildings with slight horizontal streaks can also create a "motion blur" effect, making the monorail look like it's zooming right off the page.

Coloring Tip - Realistic Textures: These pages offer a great lesson in identifying and coloring different materials. For the forklift’s massive rubber tires, suggest using a dark charcoal gray instead of pure black. This allows young artists to press harder to add darker shading for the tire treads. For the helicopter’s cargo crate, mixing light and dark browns in straight, parallel lines will perfectly mimic the look of natural wood grain against the metal aircraft.
